Highway Service Worker

Statement of the Job:
Works under the general supervision of the Operations Manager and Working Supervisor. Performs the tasks necessary for the construction or reconstruction and the repair and maintenance of the county highway, bridge and culvert systems. Position may be a member of a crew or may work alone.
Responsible for keeping roads clean and in safe repair; the safe operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles; accurate documentation of labor, equipment, and materials; working toward the objectives of the operations department; the safety and care of coworkers, facility, and Butler County residents.
Must have, or obtain with 120 days of hire date, a Valid Ohio Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement and less than 6 points.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalency, must be able to accept on-call duties be on-site within 45 minutes of being called in, work flexible hours, work alone or with others, have the ability to read and write and comprehend and act upon written instruction and to know and understand policies and procedures.
Incumbent must be able to work daily and perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time in adverse weather.
Incumbent must be able to operate light equipment, trucks, tractors, must be able to climb ladders, shovel, deal with heights up to 55 feet, lift 100 pounds, bend twist, stand and walk.
Incumbent must wear uniforms and safety equipment as required by OSHA and BCEO safety policy.
Incumbent must be able to perform all of the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
Communicate well and work well with others and cooperate with residents of Butler County, vendors, customers, and employees of Butler County.
Remove snow and spread chemicals and materials for snow and ice control. Must be available to perform this function during shift intervals, all hours of the day, seven days a week;
Must operate dump trucks, skid steer loader, rubber tire loader, chipper, bucket truck; push mowers; gas-powered, electric and hand tools; and tractors, all of which may necessary for the maintenance and repair of county roads, bridges and culverts; load and unload dirt, spread gravel, stone mix and tar; seal surface, clean ditches and channels; place traffic signs and pavement marking; backfill and relocate ditches;
Transport tools, supplies, and materials to and from job sites;
Landscape construction areas;
Clears trees and brush;
Erect rigging and scaffolding;
Install signs and barricades;
Flag for traffic control and site safety.
Perform other functions as required by the Supervisor or Manager.
Other Functions as required:
Perform upkeep and care of the facility;
May be required to use cutting torch and welder;
Fill in for building and ground activities as needed;
Operate forklift as needed;
Assist mechanics with the maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Skills and Knowledge:
Incumbent must have knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Operations Department as they apply to the work assignments;
Must have the ability to control traffic flow in construction areas.
Must have the ability to recognize unsafe work zones and practices and report them to a supervisor
Must know the policies and procedures for purchasing and accounting as they apply to the accounting department and as required by the Butler County Auditor and Board of Commissioners.
Most work is performed outside where the incumbent may work alone and is exposed to extremes in outdoor temperatures and weather conditions, noise, dirt, dust, grease, burns vibration, electrical and mechanical hazards, moving traffic hazards. Exposure to unfavorable health and safety factors is frequently present and work may be exacting. The incumbent may experience eyestrain while plowing snow.
